There’s been a lot of Hype about Belfast’s newest Pop-up restaurant. Opening on the former site of the successful “Home” right in the heart of Belfast and put together by the guys behind “always a queue outside” Boojum , suffice to say expectations were high. The blurb tells us “American BBQ joint Bubbacue offers long, slow smoked pork, ribs, brisket and sausage coupled with hearty American sides and desserts.” My wife and I toured along the southern states in America for 4 weeks a few years back and they certainly know all there is to know about meat, BBQ and smoking. So suffice to say I was a little excited that this place was opening but also a little nervous as to if they could get it right.

This week we have been mostly preparing for our Slightly Geeky MOVEMBER PUB QUIZ! Held this Thursday night at the Hudson Bar in Gresham Street (the back of Castle court) this is going to be a cracker of a night. We'll be there form 7pm taking registrations and what not then we kick off at 8pm. We're going to have 7(ish)rounds of excellent pub quizzery, but with a slighty geeky edge. The skinnyWhen we teamed up with the guys at BADHAVEN.COM we couldn't help but feel their influence (or force as they kept calling it) and that influence has permeated all the way through to next Thursday night, before we knew it we had a squid with a hat on a poster and Slightly Geeky pub quiz. But It'll not be so geeky as to alienate the normo's, so bring all your mates regardless of their level of geekiness. but put it this way, there will be no sports round, lol. It's gonna be £3 entry and a max of 6 people per team, but you can feel really good about spending money in a pub (instead of the usual cloud of regret that we usually wake up with in the morning) because this is all going to charity. MOVEMBER is a charity supporting Prostate and testicular cancer and if you want to read more about the serious stuff I put a post up about it earlier, find that here. Sponsored roundsOne idea we had was to have sponsored rounds, so any website or business can sponser a round for a min donation of £10. All the money goes into the pot for the grand total. So far we've got rounds sponsored by: Banterflix - Great local weekly film podcast. they've recently done James bond and Hammer Horror Specials. If you like the sound of a few lads having some great craic discussing movies and all the latest box office info these are your guys. they'll be sponsoring the Movies round(obviously) TheSkeletonBlog.com - Mad comics every Monday morning to help you laugh your way through the weeks worst day. The Skeleton Blog will not only be sponsoring our picture round but he will be creating it as well. BadHaven.com - the Bad boys of the local and global geek scene. Mark form Bad Haven will be sharing hosting duties with myself (Chris) so if you've ever wanted to put a face to the site (so to speak) come on down Thursday night. They will be sponsoring and creating our geek round. The First Horror Picture Show - Belfast's only Monthly horror movie club and sister site to pastiebap will be sponsoring a random round (mainly because there's no horror movie round ;) Pastiebap.com - 'nuff said really. PrizesWe put out the call to find prizes and items for our raffle and first back was the most generous man in hip-hop, Belfast's dirtcore legend Roysta, who is making a name for his art nowadays at Cyclops Jesus Designs. He has donated a painting that will be up for grabs on the night. The great guys over at Hi-life Diners Club 2-4-1 dining have donated one of their Platinum cards which has a £84.99 value. The Guys at my local SPAR have donated a crate of beer for the winners as well as Coca-Cola headphones for everyone on the team. There will be a selection of fine Horror DVD's donated by The First Horror Picture show for the taking too. The Hudson bar have promised us a meal for 2 to throw into the mix and having eaten there on Monday I can heartily recommend it! We'll be adding to this list as we get more info from others. But you guys don't do it for the prizes anyway you do it for the charity, right? So there you have it. Know that we are working tirelessly to bring you the best Quiz we can and the one thing that we can guarantee you is that it will be great craic. Oh and the Hudson have recently got their own craft beer and I can also testify that it is delicious. We'll have more updates, but we'll see you down there on Thursday yeah? I am 30 years old. I love horror movies in a big way. I love NI in a big way. I also love eating out, so soon I'm going to be in a big way. I resided in Dundee for 5 years before returning to NI with my chosen lady friend. Upon returning I realised that the Belfast I left wasn't the one I retuned home to. Now it's a city over run with all my favourite things. The current fads I'm going through are Beer making, Bread making, Beer drinking, Bread eating, watching Elementary, listening to Kormac, the Hudson Bar and my own monthly horror movie night at the previously mentioned bar. Derry based rockers Wylding have release a new video for their song Siren. Shot and edited by BigBadLlama. It's a psychedelic performance video that finally comes some way to displaying how much energy the band have when playing live. Check it out below! We like ourselves a bit of BeeMickSee and since he had his single launch as Boojum Burrito bar it's hard to deny that he can be the master of self promotion. He has some pretty sweet videos as well. Here's his latest. We think it's pretty damn good. He has a new EP coming out and this is the first tune off it. The new and improved Lyric Theatre has been open for about a year and a half now and quite frankly it's better than ever. Just one of six buildings across the UK to be shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize, this is surely one of Belfast's most beautiful architectural achievements yet. It's not all about the scenery though is it?The Lyric is also home to some of the finest performances Northern Ireland has ever seen, so PastieBap headed over to the Lyric last week to see Shakespeare's Macbeth... Macbeth is perhaps Shakespeare's most popular and well-known tragedy and it's often referred to as 'The Scottish Play' out of superstition. Although, that name doesn't quite sit right for this local production. I think 'The Northern Irish Play' would be far more apt. You may cringe and shrink back down in your seat at the crow of a Northern Irish accent, but for some reason our accent lends itself extremely well to Shakespeare. Somehow it flows and sounds almost natural and to be perfectly honest, it just works. I was a bit worried about sitting through a couple of hours of nothing but Shakespearean confusion, but after about fifteen minutes everything was understood. It's a bit like watching a film with subtitles - after a few minutes your brain does all the work for you and you don't even notice. The stage is relatively simple, yet interesting. It's split into two - at ground level there's a long table, some stools and what looks like a castle wall, and above this towards the back of the stage is a raised, tilted area filled with gravel and a single bench. This allows for swift scene changes and progressions and for the action to flow seamlessly between the heath and the castle. Directed by Lynne Parker, this production of Macbeth was performed very well and Stuart Graham's portrayal of Macbeth himself was intriguing to watch. Strong and brave one moment, and weak and crazed the next - it was easy to see Macbeth's spiral into madness. Andrea Irvine commanded the stage also with her display of a more human Lady Macbeth than we may be used to. The tone of the whole play was suited to the story well as it was dark, cold and extremely atmospheric thanks to the stark set and pin-point lighting. The three witch's performances where perhaps my favourite as they truly seemed mad and untrustworthy, yet still compelling. It was a true stroke of genius when they set up a gas burner with a 'cauldron' on it at the end of the first half which then bubbled its way through the interval. Even looking at the poster for this production of Macbeth (which can be seen at the top of this page), it is clear that this is going to be something different. And something different it is. It's entertaining, modern and innovative, yet doesn't stray too far from the original way in which it should be presented. Although I wasn't quite expecting to, I thoroughly enjoyed this local production and would recommend it to anyone. A bit of culture, some fine acting and an interesting portrayal of a classic. A definite must see! Who wrote this...?I'm 20 years old, studying Journalism with Photo-Imaging at the University of Ulster Coleraine Campus. I have an undying love for Belfast and all that it has to offer, an undying love for sleeping, trashy tv shows, foreign snack-foods and being irresponsible with money. I also quite like reading, hip-hop, dub step, anything acoustic and Food Network TV. It's not every week that a new bar opens in Belfast, not to mention a super cool, super relaxed arcade-style bar. So in true PastieBap tradition, we went out for a bit of a look and a bit of a drink. Tilt, a new bar which opened its door this week on the Ormeau Road (451 Ormeau Road to be precise) boasts two floors with an upstairs inspired by a Brooklyn games arcade. Up the very impressive staircase you'll find: three American pool tables, a pinball machine, two air hockey tables and several games machines where you can play Pac-Man, Tetris, Space Invaders, Frogger, Donkey Kong and so much more. The decor can only be described as 'cool' and very American, without being kitsch or too stereotyped. The exposed brick walls are caked in graffiti which gives the whole place a very street, relaxed atmosphere, and the only extra decoration is in the form of massive mirrored frames with paint-can sprayed quotes. All in all very nice to look at indeed. At the bar you can get a range of jam jar cocktails with videogame inspired names such as 'Bowser's Brew', 'Streetfighter' and 'Zelda.' They also serve American style food in the form of burgers and hotdogs. Every Tuesday is games night with free pool, arcades, air hockey and pinball from 8.30pm, with a few drinks promos thrown in (like £3 cocktails!) All in all, we think Tilt is going to be one of our favourite new bars in Belfast, with its easy-going atmosphere, fun cocktails and arcade games to pass the time. For the third year I’m (Chris) going to be participating in Movember. For the uninitiated Movember is an event that is held yearly in November where men try and cultivate facial hair in return for donations. The money then goes toward Testicular and Prostate cancer research. This is a very personal cause for myself and Laura (we write pastiebap.com) as we lost out Granada to this disease a few years ago. My wife also lost her father to this cancer a few years ago. So it’s kind of a big deal to us. I’m sure everyone has been effected or knows some-one that been effected by this horrible disease. So you can relate to what I’m talking about. Ron Swanson - My Mustche idol The fun bit That’s us done with the serious bit and now onto the fun bit. My attempts to raise cash for this worthwhile cause is 2 fold. 1. Grow a Tache I will (trying to) grow a Moustache. People will (hopefully) donate money because I’m doing this. So I look stupid and Cancer research get money. It’s a win/win really. If past years are anything to go bay, my ‘tache will be spectacularly awful. I’ll post photos up on the Facebook at regular intervals, for you to laugh at. But also to hopefully motivate you to donate money. I have MoSpace where you can donate. I also have a team called the PASTIEBAP TACHE BRIGADEERS. If you you’re taking part in Movembers and would like to join my team, then come on over! We’d be happy to have you. 2. The Pub Quiz We’re going to host a pub quiz with our new pals BADHAVEN in the Hudson bar at the end of the month. Thursday 29th November to be exact. We'll have sponsered rounds, moutche fun for all. we're still working ti all out. But it's gonna be a lot of fun. All money raised will be for Movember and fighting the evil cancers! if you click on this link it will take you to the event on facebook, where we'll be updating all the info as we work it out. Thank you for reading and have a good Movember. Who wrote this?Chris Caldwell
